The UKCAT is a two-hour, computer-based, multiple-choice test which is required for entry to medical and dentisry programmes at UK Universities.
The UKCAT is a challenging test, primarily due to the tight time constraints that are imposed on students.
The following UK Universities require the UKCAT:
Aberdeen, Barts and The London School of Medicine, Brighton and Sussex, Cardiff, Dundee, Durham, East Anglia, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hull York Medical School, Imperial College London (grad only), Keele, King’s College London, Leeds, Leicester, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford (grad only), Peninsula College of Medicine & Dentistry, Queen Mary London, Queen’s University Belfast, Sheffield, Southampton, St. Andrew’s, St. George’s London and Warwick (grad only).
The UKCAT is made up of 5 sections, each testing a different skill. See below for the breakdown of the test:
| Section | Questions | Timing | Scoring |
| Verbal Reasoning | 55 | 21 minutes | 300-900 |
| Quantitative Reasoning | 36 | 22 minutes | 300-900 |
| Abstract Reasoning | 65 | 15 minutes | 300-900 |
| Decision Analysis | 28 | 31 minutes | 300-900 |
| Non-Cognitive Analysis | Varies | 26 minutes | Brief Summary |
The timings in the table above are strict. Time may not be banked from one section to another therefore, when preparing for the test, students should practice test-like questions under timed conditions.
Students may only sit the UKCAT once per application cycle. Unfortunately if you are unsuccessful in achieving your target score and gaining admittance to university, you will need to apply again the following year and will also have to re-sit the UKCAT as your score cannot be carried over. Due to this, the UKCAT is a high stakes exam, and it is important to take your preparation seriously.
The test is taken at Pearson Vue testing centres between July and October. Click here to find your closest testing centre.
